Known only by month or year

No day of death is recorded for these, so no yahrzeit day can be given.

Month known (5)

Year known (29)

How these dates are worked out
  • A yahrzeit day is given only where the day of death is documented. A death known only by month or year is in the short list below the calendar, with no day, and no date is ever estimated.
  • A Hebrew date read from a gravestone or written in a Hebrew record is listed exactly as recorded. A gravestone date is preferred to a civil one.
  • A date known only from a civil record is converted to the Hebrew calendar. The time of death is not recorded, so a death after sunset would fall on the next Hebrew day — each such entry says so.
  • Adar: a death in Adar of a common year is shown in Adar I in a leap year (5787 is one), with the Adar II date in the notes — many observe Adar II, some both. A death in Adar I or Adar II is observed in that month in a leap year and in Adar in a common year. The family’s own custom decides.
  • A yahrzeit begins at sunset on the evening before the date shown.
  • Flags (amber) mark anything uncertain: a record graded Likely or Possible, sources that disagree, or a record that says “probably”.
